Sixty years of State Terrorism in Sri Lanka

BBC journalist with the jubilant crowd in Colombo was telling us, how terrorism has now been defeated in Sri Lanka. It is a clear indication that the world still hasn't grasped the fundamental root cause behind the civil unrest in this country.

State terrorism has always been the major problem in this tiny island. It is an ugly and arrogant monster that always keeps his head above the seas and mountains of Sri Lanka.

 Tamils were killed and their properties were burned in the seventies by Sinhala mobs

For more than sixty years, successive Sri Lankan governments backed by racist Sinhala extremists have been oppressing the Tamil minorities. They brutally killed thousands of innocent Tamils, burnt their properties and sent the rest in ships as refugees to the North of the country in the fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties.

 When Tamils asked for their rights, Sinhala extremists always responded with violence.

Pearl of the Indian ocean has now become a land of the demons

They have now killed thousands of innocent Tamils in one of the most cruel wars in the history of the mankind. They used internationally banned weapons on innocent women and children and murdered them without showing any mercy.

 They kept on using the buzz words “War on Terror” and “Humanitarian Operation” to justify their atrocities. They made the people to starve for months, denied medicine from the sick the elderly and let the wounded to die in the open fields.

 Innocent women and children were killed in hospitals, schools and even inside bunkers. Thousands of wounded civilians were burnt alive in the bunkers.

 They brutally killed the rebels who surrendered with white flags and violated all the norms of a conventional war.

 They are now busy burning and dumping the bodies of innocent Tamils.

 Media and aid workers are not allowed to the war zone because the Sri Lankan forces are working day and night to hide all the evidences.

 Those who did manage to leave the war zone were sent to barbed wired concentration camps. Sri Lankan forces are regularly filtering out young people from the concentration camps and taking them for questioning. Many of these children don't return.

Hospitals were bombed

 Young Tamil women are raped and tortured in these notorious camps. Dead bodies of the innocent Tamils are thrown outside the camps with deep wounds on their heads and necks.

 Forced disappearances, random killings, rape, torture and the list goes on. Sri Lanka has become one of the worst countries in the world that telling the truth is considered as a crime and those who tell the truth are punished.

 Pearl of the Indian ocean has now become a land of blood thirsty demons.

Experts of the free world have failed to see the bigger picture

Many military strategists, political analysts and terror experts in the free world have either failed to recognise the deeper issues in Sri Lanka or they have deliberately applied a methodology to cause one of the greatest humanitarian tragedies of the century.

 In any conflict resolution or problem solving exercise, one of the most important parts is to see a bigger picture and define the problem accurately.

What goes wrong very often is that the parties who come forward to solve an issue tend to focus on just part of the problem or they try to deal with the symptoms instead of the root cause.

 It will be worse, when a party deliberately implement a wrong solution to a problem with hidden agendas.

 When they do that, they don't just fail to solve the main issue but they even end up making the real problem much bigger.

 Complexities in the Sri Lankan civil war very often make even the so called wise to misinterpret the truths and make decisions against the vulnerable in the society.

 A complete jigsaw puzzle that shows a crying baby can be made into a monster if half of the pieces are removed.

 Instead of becoming sympathetic towards the crying baby, the jigsaw player is now confronted with a monster that is made up of half of the pieces.

 Those who considered that LTTE was the only problem had failed to understand that they were missing half of the pieces in the puzzle.

 Implementing solutions without understanding a problem can cost innocent lives and what has happened in Sri Lanka in the last few months is a proof for this.

Lessons from Medicine

A fever is considered as one of the body's immune mechanisms to attempt a neutralization of a perceived threat inside the body, be it bacterial or viral. Carl Wunderlich discovered that fever is not a disease, but the body's response to a disease.

 Any sensible Physician would try to find out the root cause of the disease instead of wasting time dealing with the symptoms.

 Disease in Sri Lanka is State Terrorism that has been going on for more than 60 years.

 Unless the root cause is dealt with, Sri Lanka will continue to hear the voice of the oppressed louder and louder.

Mankind has already lost its sanity

When BBC and other channels in the UK gave importance to the celebrations in Colombo but failed to mention about the thousands of wounded and dying Tamils in the war zone, one has to question if the mankind has already lost its sanity.

 We can't bring peace to the trouble spots in the world with people who have heads but no hearts.

 We desperately need diplomats who have the hearts for the oppressed and suffering people

Story of the Tamils

Tamils in Sri Lanka had their own nation before but it was merged with the Sinhala kingdoms during the British rule

 When they left this beautiful island in 1948, it was left to function as one country. Democracy failed in Sri Lanka because the successive governments that came to power were always chosen by the majority Sinhalese.

 Sinhala governments backed by the Sinhala Buddhist extremists, always tried to please the majority in order to remain in power. They came up with policies to discriminate Tamils in education, employment and other arenas. Sinhala was made the only official language and Tamils were made as second class citizens.

Tamils can be compared to the Jewish people who lived under the Nazi regimes. Even under persecution, they worked hard to make their lives better.

 Sinhala governments had many times ordered their agents to kill Tamils and destroy their properties. More than two thousand Tamils lost their lives in 1983.All of them were murdered by the Sinhalese in the south of Sri Lanka. They were murdered in prisons, schools, hospitals and even in churches.

Successive Sinhala governments had implemented several state sponsored colonisation schemes that Tamil villages and towns were turned into Sinhala settlements. Many homes and farms in the eastern and north eastern provinces were forcefully taken from the Tamils and were given to the Sinhalese. Names of roads and towns in Tamil areas were changed from Tamil to Sinhala.

Tamil Libraries and cultural buildings were burned to dust in order to wipe out the history of Tamils from Sri Lanka. Highly intelligent Tamil youth were denied University places.

Jaffna library was burned by the Sinhala mob in 1981 (At that time it was the biggest in South Asia)

In 1981, Sinhala politicians ordered a Sinhala mob to burn and destroy the Jaffna public library. At that time it was South Asia's biggest library. The 95,000 volumes of the Public Library destroyed by the fire included numerous culturally important and irreplaceable manuscripts.

Saving innocent lives is one of the greatest things we can do to show to the world that we obey our conscience and we are still humans.

After years of oppression under murderous Sinhala regimes, frustrated Tamil youth took arms to fight for the survival of Tamils and to reclaim the Tamil Kingdom that they had lost during the British rule.

Sri Lanka is no longer a safe place for the Vulnerable

Sadly, one of the greatest humanitarian tragedies of the century is taking place in front of our eyes.

Intervention of India and China has made the Sri Lankan ethnic issue much more complex . While the dogs are fighting for a bone, innocent Tamil civilians are dying like flies.

Response from the individuals, politicians, international organisations and heads of the states have shown to us that Sri Lanka is no longer a safe place for the victims but the wicked has a lot to rejoice for.

Justice has failed in this tear drop terror island. Killing fields of Sri Lanka are flowing with the blood of innocent men, women and children.

Tamils are persecuted in concentration camps. Young men and women are disappearing daily from these torture chambers.

If we are going to wait till we get the permission from Sri Lanka, that is never going to happen. A killer who is busy dumping the bodies of the innocents is not going to invite us and show us how cruel he is.

Urgent steps should be taken to save the dying Tamils from the hands of the brutal Sri Lankan regime.

Nothing but the truth

Thank you for bringing our cries to the light. We have been begging the IC to open their eyes and see the truth, but they are keeping their eyes wide open but acting like it is closed. UN is sending the people who are behind all these humanitarian crisis. I hope representative of UN are enjoying Sri Lanka's victory meal but they wouldn't know those meals are made out of Tamil people's blood (and dead bodies) (hope they liked it).

This is a new beginning. There is a sayingthat you can wake up a man if he sleeping but not if he is pretending. The IC and UN are not taking enough actions. Why can't they see the problem. Atleast, they must suspend from the Common Wealth and ban the Criket team playing interantional games.

The problem is getting worse.I wanted every government to take actions especially Gordon Brown.

What goes around will come around ..100fold...

We are all devastated..and learned something as well.
We Tamils have not much to offer from Eelam and that's why this cruel world stood silence. If ONE American is caught in the hands of enemy, they send troops..But we screamed on the streets around the world and they didn't hear us properly. You watched the genocide via satellite and kept QUIET. You will definitely pay for it...I STILL HEAR THEIR CRY FROM THE EDGE OF THE DEATH...I WILL NOT LET GO THIS PAIN.

Killing fields of Sri Lanka

The Government of Sri Lanka and various western governments think that with defeat of the LTTE, the problems of Sri Lanka will be solved. No one seems to understand that the Tigers are not the cause of the problem, rather a symptom! Unless the discrimination of the Tamils when it comes to employment, education, and land are solved, Sri Lanka will not be safe for the Tamils. Currently, freedom of expression, freedom of speech, and the ability to make choices do not exist for the Tamils.

Re: Killing fields of Sri Lanka

How can US under the leader of Obama's statue and calibre allow Sri Lankan government starve, bomb and shell the area that it designated as SAFE? How can UN watch civilians being bombed and left to bleed because the extremist racist government prevented medicine and food getting in and barred the aid workers and carers?

Re: Killing fields of Sri Lanka

The LTTE is not an terreiost organisation and they representive of tamils.
This is very clear but the uglgy and worst so called government is making them as terrer
But the world should understand by seeing properly and watching very carefully the actual situations in real land

now LTTE had been defeted in the worst way where one can think.So far nobody did like this but srilankan so called government did it against tamils. The rest of the world include UN and India were watching this worst activities

We are very well know about newtown's 3rd law "Every force has equel opposit force", one Day Tamils will come into the power by overcoming all this ugly and worst activities by GOD grace. The nature itself kill them in the way of Earth quack, global warming, Tsunami like this because of their worst activities. This is will happen and it has to happen to save the truth. so God will do it in near time

Thanks for putting the points across. I am dismayed by some news programme showing celebrations. What is there to celebrate? Oppressing one race by another is a celebration. I don’t agree.
Sri Lankan government is not allowing any international bodies because they are trying to destroy the evidence. If the dead bodies are buried in a mass grave then it will be found. If they burn the bodies they can hide:

i. How exactly they died (bullet holes, skin showing chemical exposure, poisonous gas);
ii. How many died, the exact numbers;
iii. Where they died exact locations ie did they die in cross-fire or murdered by the brutal regime;
iv. Children taken away from camps because the government to make sure that one generation is wiped out so when the older generation is perished the number of Tamils living in the country will be very small. They can adjust the population of Tamils living in the island;
v. Taking young men and women for questioning in the pretence these people are tigers. Once these people are taken away, they never return;
vi. Letting the civilians in the camps die of starvation;
vii. There is accusation that the females are subjected to sexual harassment.

If the international journalists, governments, NGOs Amnesty International, UCHR and UN delay their presence in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan government can hide alter the facts. The Sri Lankan government is confident that it has eliminated LTTE so why wait. Soldiers and government officials can pretend that they looking after the people, but the history don’t support this at all.

For the past 61 years, the Tamils have been oppressed by various governments. By reading the comments posted some of the readers, I am appalled by their idiocy, lack of knowledge and sympathy for humanity, attitude and jumping on the band wagon. So be a true Buddhist and do the right thing.

I quote from Wikipedia the meaning of Buddhism “Buddhism is a family of beliefs and practices considered by most to be a religion which is based on the teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as "The Buddha" Buddhists recognize him as an awakened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end their suffering by understanding the true nature of phenomena, thereby escaping the cycle of suffering and rebirth achieving Nirvana. Among the methods various schools of Buddhism apply towards this goal are: ethical conduct and altruistic behaviour, devotional practices, ceremonies and the invocation of bodhisattvas, renunciation of worldly matters, cultivating continuous mindfulness, meditation, physical exercises, study, and the cultivation of wisdom”

A Big Thank you for you work

The oppressed Tamils back home now in the West by gagging us for our cause. Tamil community is such they are frustrated yet no one did promotion in the West correctly instead they left everything to their belief! Sadly the religion let them down too because of the way they went around doing it did not appeal to the West either where as brought about rejection. I know in London the number of temples speaks loads helpless hindus always turn to becoming more of a Hindu than coming out to promote their cause. One reason being the banning of Tamil organizations when they took care of their own people when Got failed to. No propaganda machine behind them to glamourize their good qualities while Sri Lankan propaganda machine went around trashing and ridiculing Tamils in every way as possible. The IC believed it!!? Makes me wonder if that is the reason for the fall of Tamil cause. Tamils are individuals too we see all kinds of people but when it comes to compassion they are NO1. This compassion got twisted by the Govt of Sri Lanka as something peculier. Western world believed Tamil=Cult, maniacs the idea marketed well,every Tamil living in the West had sometime or another got chased by the extremist Buddhist Govt organized thugs. When the people back home suffer everyone feels for them, jogging own experiences of hiding under the bed, fleeing to neighbours, loosing their properties and possessions. Having done all that within the country, Sri Lanka publicity painting Tamils as bad people not only among the majority Sinhalese but in the world arena international community believed it. When they planned it since 1948 this genocide was on the card acting out this violence for votes. Your work is amazing getting distributed all around. Wonderful work for Tamils surely you have a place in every Tamil's, Humanitarians' heart and a place in heven. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

State Terrorism in Sri Lanka

Hi Richard,

Thank you for another great article!

Sri-Lankan regime and their propaganda machine are trying to portray to the outside world that the country is a peace-loving Buddhist Paradise.

But this is far from the truth. Here are some FACTS:

Buddhism in Sri Lanka is not the peaceful one that is preached by people like Dalai Lama in Tibet. For example, SWRD Bandaranaike (a former Prime Minister) was
MURDERED by a Buddhist monk in 1959!

Buddhist mobs (including monks) attacked several churches in Sri Lanka in April, threatening to kill a pastor in Hambanthota and ransacked a 150-year-old Methodist church building in Colombo.

In Sri Lanka, Buddhism is not what it was preached by Buddha. It has its own leaders of Buddhists monks who have their own political party. They have continuously promoted the idea: "This Island belongs to Sinhalese Buddhists Only.”

This ideology is very similar to the one used by the Al-Qaeda and Islamic Extremists.

This NONSENSE would have been acceptable in the stone-age, but we live in the information-age!

I hope the tamils would unite in a meaningful way atleast now. even prabhakaran killed other tamils who he thought were his rivals which the the tamils stood by watching. which he might have taken for approval. theese were the cancers that eventualy destroyed the current struggle. there should be no rivalries in fighting for freedom then we can come back with greater force either politically or militarily. we always had the superior courage, which stems from knowing that you fight for the freedom and not for petty things, that made us withatand the higher firepower and win frequently.

first of all i would like to thank whoever wrote this article as it shows us how tamils have been discriminated through the years

the UN are blind , when bankimoon went to srilanka he used it as a free holiday not addressing the real issue. once he came back he sent a few more people there so that they could also have a holiday

the only way to stop tamils being discriminated is to take up arms again.you can only fight force with greater force. the time for talking has gone. everyday people are dieing. everyday people are watching bullshit tv not understanding whats going on. the sinhala fuckers dead the better

As Usual

This opinion is extremely one-sided and biased. When events of a tragedy of are listed, there is a failure to include what preceded that event. Such as the burning down of the Jaffna library, several government soldiers were murdered in cold blood the day before. If that tragedy did not happen then the library would still be intact. I feel I must ask, what is your affiliation to the Tamils to write such a lopsided story?
